Petzl Am’D SCREW-LOCK: strong D-shaped locking carabiner for equipment connections

The Petzl Am’D is an asymmetrical aluminum locking carabiner designed for connecting belay devices and technical equipment to a harness. Its D shape supports efficient loading along the major axis, while its capacity makes it useful for carrying and organizing equipment. The ergonomic frame and Keylock nose facilitate handling, including when wearing gloves.

Why choose the Am’D?

  • D-shaped basket designed for belay systems and equipment connections
  • Generous capacity for attaching or carrying technical equipment
  • Glove-friendly ergonomic frame
  • Keylock nose helps prevent snagging during clipping and removal
  • SCREW-LOCK sleeve with manual control for occasional use and contaminated environments

SCREW-LOCK for snow, ice and dirty environments

Petzl identifies the SCREW-LOCK version for occasional use and dirty environments. Unlike an automatic mechanism, the manual sleeve is less susceptible to being obstructed by contaminants such as mud or ice, but the user must close and secure it manually and verify the connection before loading.

Petzl Am’D vs Sm’D

Choose the Am’D when you need more internal capacity and a larger 25 mm opening for devices or equipment. Choose the lighter, more compact Petzl Sm’D when minimizing weight and bulk is more important. Both use a versatile D-shaped design and Keylock nose.

Petzl Am’D vs OK

The Am’D is suited to connecting belay devices and equipment directly to a harness. The symmetrical oval Petzl OK is the more specialized option for centering pulleys, ascenders and progress-capture pulleys.

Petzl Am’D vs ATTACHE

The Am’D is a D-shaped connector with greater major-axis strength and capacity for equipment connections. The pear-shaped Petzl ATTACHE is optimized for belaying, belay stations, clove hitches and Munter-hitch use.

Belay-system applications

The Am’D can be used to connect compatible belay devices to a harness. Explore the Petzl GRIGRI for assisted-braking belaying or the Petzl REVERSO for multipurpose belaying and rappelling. Always verify complete-system compatibility and follow the device manufacturer’s instructions.

Winter climbing and training

The glove-friendly shape and manually operated SCREW-LOCK sleeve make this version relevant to alpine and winter systems when correctly inspected and maintained. Climbers seeking instruction in modern belaying, equipment and anchor systems can explore Skimo’s Basic Ice Climbing Course.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Petzl Am’D best used for?

It is designed primarily for connecting belay devices or technical equipment to a harness and for carrying equipment where a larger D-shaped connector is useful.

When should I choose Am’D instead of Sm’D?

Choose Am’D for greater capacity and a wider opening. Choose Sm’D for a lighter and more compact connector.

Is Am’D SCREW-LOCK suitable for winter use?

Petzl identifies SCREW-LOCK for occasional use and contaminated environments. The connector must still be kept clean, inspected and manually locked before loading.

Climbing and work-at-height activities are inherently dangerous. Users must be trained, competent and follow Petzl’s technical instructions and compatibility guidance.
