Petzl OK: oval locking carabiner for pulleys and ascenders

The Petzl OK is a lightweight aluminum locking carabiner with a symmetrical oval shape. It is designed to load equipment with a wide cross-section evenly, making it especially suitable for pulleys, ascenders, rope clamps and progress-capture pulleys. Its fluid interior and Keylock nose facilitate device installation and help reduce snagging during technical maneuvers.

Why use an oval carabiner?

An oval connector keeps devices closer to the center of the carabiner and distributes the load symmetrically. This makes the OK a better match for many pulleys and rope-access devices than a D-shaped or pear-shaped connector, particularly when equipment must remain aligned and rotate smoothly.

Key features

  • Symmetrical oval shape optimized for pulleys, ascenders and progress-capture pulleys
  • Fluid interior design facilitates rotation and limits catch points
  • Keylock nose helps prevent snagging on ropes, webbing and equipment
  • H-shaped aluminum frame improves grip, protects markings and reduces weight
  • SCREW-LOCK system includes a red unlocked-gate indicator

SCREW-LOCK for harsh environments

The manual SCREW-LOCK sleeve can be locked according to need. Petzl identifies this version as suitable for harsh environments where mud, snow or ice could interfere with an automatic locking mechanism. The user must manually close and secure the sleeve and verify it before loading.

Petzl OK vs Sm’D

Choose the OK when a symmetrical oval shape is desirable for pulleys or ascenders. Choose the lighter, compact D-shaped Petzl Sm’D for more general-purpose connections, lanyards and compact technical systems.

Petzl OK vs Am’D

The OK centers wide devices and works particularly well in pulley systems. The larger D-shaped Petzl Am’D provides more capacity for connecting equipment directly to a harness or carrying multiple items.

Petzl OK vs ATTACHE

The pear-shaped Petzl ATTACHE is optimized for belay devices, belay stations, clove hitches and Munter-hitch use. The OK is the more specialized choice when symmetrical loading and device alignment are priorities.

Compatible pulley and rope-clamp systems

The OK works naturally with equipment such as the Petzl MICRO TRAXION, Petzl NANO TRAXION and Petzl TIBLOC. Compatibility must be checked for the complete system before use.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Petzl OK intended for belaying?

Its main advantage is symmetrical loading of pulleys, ascenders and other wide devices. For Munter hitches or applications requiring a larger pear-shaped basket, ATTACHE is generally the more suitable shape.

Why does an oval shape help with pulleys?

The symmetrical basket helps keep a pulley centered instead of forcing it toward one end of the connector, supporting predictable alignment within the system.

Is SCREW-LOCK suitable for ice and winter environments?

Petzl identifies SCREW-LOCK as suitable for contaminated environments where ice or mud may jam an automatic mechanism. It still requires cleaning, inspection and manual locking before use.

Climbing and work-at-height activities are inherently dangerous. Users must be trained, competent and follow Petzl’s instructions and compatibility guidance.
